Small checks that make your house feel cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable

When guests come over, most homeowners focus on surfaces — floors, counters, decor. But what people feel in a home comes from things they don’t consciously see: air quality, humidity, plumbing, and how well the house quietly functions. Before the holidays, a quick systems reset can make your home noticeably more comfortable without any renovations or upgrades.

Here’s where to focus.

Clean Bathroom Exhaust Fans

Bathroom fans collect dust and lint over time, which reduces airflow and traps humidity.

What to do

  • Remove the fan cover

  • Vacuum dust buildup

  • Wipe the cover with a mild cleaner

Why it matters - A clean fan clears steam faster and prevents lingering odours — especially important when multiple guests are using the same bathroom.

Address Tub & Shower Mildew (Gently)

Even clean homes develop mildew at the tub line and silicone joints.

Focus areas

  • Silicone corners

  • Bottom edge of glass panels

  • Grout at the tub or shower base

Use a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft brush or old toothbrush. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage finishes or silicone.

Vacuum Floor Vents & Cold Air Returns

Dust and debris in vents affect both air quality and airflow.

Quick steps

  • Remove vent covers

  • Vacuum inside as far as you can reach

  • Wipe covers before reinstalling

This alone can make the air in a home feel fresher without adding any scent.

Replace the Furnace Filter

A fresh filter improves airflow, reduces dust, and helps your furnace run quieter.

Optional tip: If you like light scenting, add 2–3 drops of essential oil to a new filter only. Never apply oils to a dirty or old filter.

Clean the Dishwasher Filter

Most dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom.

Why it matters

  • Prevents food odours

  • Improves cleaning performance

  • Keeps the kitchen smelling neutral while cooking

It takes two minutes and makes a noticeable difference.

Check Under-Sink Plumbing

A small drip can quickly become a problem when a house is busy.

Look for

  • Damp traps

  • Loose connections

  • Slow leaks

A dry paper towel under the trap will show moisture almost immediately.

Wipe High-Touch Hardware

Door handles, railings, and switch plates collect more grime than people realize.

A quick wipe with a mild cleaner improves both cleanliness and how the home feels when guests move through it.

Test GFCIs & Tighten Outlet Covers

Test GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms and tighten any loose outlet or switch plates. It’s a small step that avoids nuisance issues during hosting.

Clean Kitchen Hood Filters

If you cook often, grease buildup in hood filters can hold odours.

How

  • Remove metal filters

  • Soak in hot water with dish soap

  • Rinse, dry, and reinstall

This helps prevent lingering cooking smells during gatherings.

Flush Hot Water at Guest Fixtures

Run hot water at sinks and tubs for a minute before guests arrive. This clears stagnant water and helps reduce sulphur or “musty” odours, especially in less-used bathrooms.

Final Thought

Great homes don’t just look clean — they function cleanly.

Air, water, ventilation, and small mechanical details all contribute to how comfortable a house feels, especially when it’s full of people.

A little attention to the systems behind the walls goes a long way.
